Henry Bates ‘Butch’ Payne, Jr., 73, of Pembroke

Beloved husband, loving father, devoted grandfather, caring friend, and life-long farmer, Henry Bates “Butch” Payne, Jr., age 73 of Pembroke, went to meet the Lord on Monday, April 27, 2026, surrounded by love at St. Thomas West Hospital in Nashville, TN.

Funeral Services will be at 1:00 PM on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at Maddux-Fuqua-Hinton Funeral Home with Rev. Andy Haley officiating and burial to follow in Rosedale Cemetery in Pembroke. Visitation will be at the funeral home that morning on Saturday, May 2, 2026, from 10:00 AM until the service time at 1:00 PM. Maddux-Fuqua-Hinton Funeral Home has been entrusted by the family to handle the arrangements.

Mr. Payne was born in Hopkinsville, KY, on August 3, 1952, the son of the late Henry Bates Payne, Sr. and Dorothy Louise Beard Payne. He graduated from Christian County High School in 1970 and went on to attend Austin Peay State University. Bates was a life-long member, former Deacon and Sunday School Teacher at Pembroke Baptist Church. He married his high school sweetheart, Brenda in 1971. He was a former board member of Christian County Farm Bureau, and was a current board member at PRECC, Pennyrile Rural Electric Coop. Bates loved farming, fishing, playing with his grandkids, seeing new places, cheering for Kentucky Basketball, and hoping for Kentucky Football. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his two sisters, Betty Banton and Darla Congdon.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Brenda Renshaw Payne of Pembroke, his daughter, Brooke (Tim) Custis of Elizabethtown, KY; his sons, Benjiman Bates (Shelley) Payne of Hopkinsville, Barry (Jettie) Payne of Pembroke; and his six grandchildren, Payton Custis, Caroline Payne, Jonathan Bates Payne, Charlotte Payne, Wyatt Henry Custis, and Ellie Payne.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in his memory to Pembroke Baptist Church Benevolence Fund at P.O. Box 219 Pembroke, KY 42266.
