Thousands of Soldiers stood in formation at Fort Campbell’s Division Parade Field… taking part in a time-honored Army tradition: the Change of Command ceremony.

They were joined by local leaders, Veterans, and military families — all there to honor the outgoing commander of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Major General Brett Sylvia.

Sylvia took command of the division in July of 2023. During his time at Fort Campbell, the 101st led the way in developing new large-scale air assault tactics, trained across multiple theaters, and deployed Soldiers on missions around the world — including Europe, the Middle East, and even hurricane relief operations here at home.

Now, the command passes to Major General David Gardner — the 101st Airborne Division’s 50th commanding general.

Gardner comes to Fort Campbell from Fort Bragg, where he helped guide U.S. Army operations and training. He’s also known for his leadership at the Joint Readiness Training Center in Louisiana — preparing Soldiers for the realities of modern combat.
