Trigg Guidance Counselor Named 2023 ‘Pathfinder’ Honoree

In a recent surprise event at Trigg County High School, its guidance counselor Janay Futrell was announced as the 2023 Hopkinsville Community College KCTCS High School Teacher/Counselor recipient of the prestigious “Pathfinder Award.”

An HCC alumna who has worked 25 years in education, Futrell has spent the past 18 years as the top student liaison for TCHS.

In a written statement, Futrell said HCC helped begin her career following high school graduation, and as a proud alumna, she’s thrilled to work with the wonderful staff and faculty at her Alma mater — just as they did for her nearly three decades ago.

The “Pathfinder Award” recognizes high school teachers and counselors for their outstanding efforts in assisting students with their college-going plans.

Dr. Alissa Young, HCC president & CEO, said the honor “recognizes the best and brightest among us, who go above and beyond to embolden and empower the next generation.” She added that Futrell has been an HCC supporter for “many years,” and that she has a passion to see TCHS students succeed.”

Any high school teacher or counselor can be eligible for the Pathfinder Award and must be nominated by a KCTCS student or faculty/staff member. Winners are then selected based on the following criteria: (1) encouraged student(s) to attend a KCTCS college; (2) assisted student(s) in identifying a career and post-secondary path; (3) provided mentorship; and (4) maintained contact with student(s).

The “Pathfinder Award” is annually doled to one teacher or counselor from each of the 16 KCTCS colleges. Nearly 250 nominations were submitted statewide this year, meaning Futrell was one of just 16 tabbed for the honor.
