Hopkinsville Fire Department Chief Steve Futrell has announced this year’s 9/11 Memorial Ceremony will be closed to the public due to COVID-19 concerns.

Chief Futrell says the Hopkinsville Fire Department has held a ceremony each year since the attacks to pay tribute to the men and women lost during the attacks on September 11, 2001, that claimed the lives of 343 firefighters, 23 officers with the New York Police Department and 37 Port Authority Officers along with 2,977 civilians. Unfortunately, he adds due to COVID-19 concerns, this year’s ceremony will be closed to the public. He says keeping the public safe is their number one priority and although this year’s ceremony will not look like years past, they hope to join with the public again in 2022.

Chief Futrell says although the pandemic does not allow for us to pay tribute in person, he is calling upon the citizens and businesses of Hopkinsville to join the city’s fire department in remembers the 343 firefighters lost that day. He says citizens and businesses alike are invited to stop by Headquarters and pick up a memorial photograph of a firefighter lost on 9/11. He asks that you display the photograph on September 11th inside your home or business throughout the day and stand with the Hopkinsville Fire Department in remembrance of those firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice. Chief Futrell says memorial photos are available during normal business hours until Saturday, September 11th.

The Hopkinsville Fire Department Headquarters is located at 116 Phillip Meacham Way.
