Todd County Time Capsule Opened After 50 Years

James Groves

The Historic Todd County group unveiled a 50-year-old time capsule to the public Saturday evening.

A county native, who was an integral part of its burial, came full circle as he watched the capsule unpacking in the Todd County Fiscal Court meeting room.

James Groves was appointed by then Judge-Executive Charlie Power to head up the committee to plan the phases for the project. Groves told the News Edge the time capsule followed the sesquicentennial of the county.

Before the capsule was opened, Groves said he couldn’t remember what all had been put in before its burial on May 1, 1971.

His speech was one of the first items pulled from the capsule, along with newspaper articles from the Kentucky New Era and Todd County Standard and a letter from then-Governor Louie Nunn.

Groves said this project was a highlight in his life.

One media source reported around 12,000 people visited Elkton the day of the time capsule’s burial.

All of the items from the capsule will be on display at the Todd County Welcome Center from Saturday, May 8, to Saturday, July 3. The welcome center is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is located in Elkton’s town’s square.
