Some Hopkinsville Electric System customers will be affected by a planned power outage in downtown Tuesday night.

HES officials say crews will be performing system upgrades that require a power outage in two areas of downtown beginning at 9:30 p.m. Power will be restored to Area 1 around 10:30 Tuesday night, while Area 2 will be without power an additional six hours. Assuming no issues are encountered during the system upgrade, HES officials indicate power should be restored to area 2 around 4:30 Wednesday morning.

HES officials say they regret the inconvenience caused by the outages, but they are necessary to upgrade the city electric grid for future reliability. During the outages, officials recommend customers not open refrigerators or freezers to retain the cold for foods inside. Residents may also choose to heat their houses warmer than normal before the outages occur.

If adverse weather occurs Tuesday night, HES officials say the contingency plan is to perform the work on Tuesday night, March 3 using the same time schedule.
