The Christian County, Kentucky, and Great Lakes Chamber of Commerce offices discussed key issues they would like to see fixed during their annual Legislative Update Eye Opener Breakfast Tuesday morning.
Chamber President/CEO Kelli Pendleton says they have several things they are lobbying for at the state level for the upcoming legislative session in 2020. They include no income tax for retired members of the military, asking for funding for all cities no matter their class size, among others.
Ashli Watts, President/CEO of the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce says their main responsibility is advocacy for chamber members.
Watts notes some of their top priorities for the upcoming session include investing in infrastructure, continuing pension reform, enacting sports gambling, curbing tobacco use, and reforming the criminal justice system.
She adds it is important to advocate these issues as the state’s 138 legislators have thousands of bills they go through each session and lots of groups lobbying for changes.
U.S. Chamber Great Lakes Regional Office Manager Kevin Courtois says uncertainty has been a big thing in government over the last twenty years, especially with each election cycle.
Courtois adds with that uncertainty, not a lot of bills are getting passed.
The uncertainty also provides a burden on the economy.
All three chamber offices strive to continue to help the business community to make the economy better across Christian County, the state, and the country.
