Hopkinsville City Council recognized Third District State Senator Whitney Westerfield at Tuesday night’s meeting and approved the second reading establishing a voluntary curbside recycling program with Hopkinsville Solid Waste.
Senator Westerfield was recognized by the Kentucky League of Cities at the meeting for being the 2018 Friend of Kentucky Cities for his work on Marsey’s Law, and other legislation to help cities. Westerfield said he is grateful for the award.
Mayor Carter Hendricks also expressed his gratitude for Westerfield’s continued service to the Third District and especially to Hopkinsville.
City council unanimously approved the curbside recycling ordinance which is voluntary and limited to residential customers who register to receive a recycling container for $5.50 a month per household. The monthly fee will appear on the Solid Waste garbage billing statement and the recycling containers will be picked up the same day as the trash is collected.
In other business, council unanimously approved a Memorandum of Agreement between the City and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet for a grant that Mayor Carter Hendricks says will address some flooding issues in the area of Second Baptist Church.
City Council also went into closed session for more than 30-minutes to discuss an economic development proposal and property acquisition, in which Mayor Hendricks stated no action was taken.
