Man Charged With Fleeing Police, Assaulting Girlfriend

A Hopkinsville man was charged with allegedly fleeing from police and assaulting his girlfriend Friday night. Hopkinsville Police say an officer observed 47-year old Jeffery Leavell driving erratically around 11:35pm in the area of 9th Street and South Campbell Street. After the officer activated his emergency equipment, Leavell reportedly continued driving for another block and stopped at Harrison and Short 19th streets.

Upon contact with Leavell, police say his passenger, Leavell’s girlfriend, stated he had been physically assaulting her at their residence since about 6:00pm and would not let her leave. Police say the victim had blood on her lips and a swollen left eye. The victim said Leavell was en route to the hospital for her injuries when he became enraged and began to drive erratically. Police say the female victim stated Leavell saw him reach speeds of 90 mph on the speedometer while they were on South Campbell Street.

Leavell was arrested and lodged in the Christian County Jail for 1st Degree Fleeing or Evading Police in a Motor Vehicle, 4th Degree Assault – Minor Injury, 2nd Degree Unlawful Imprisonment, Disregarding a Stop Sign, and No Operator’s License.
