When her show “Illuminating Cadiz” opens Friday at 4 PM in the Janice Mason Art Museum, it will be a clear full-circle moment for Dana Major.
Her father, Don, grew up in the Caledonia area just off of Old Canton Road, born in his father’s old farm house after the family came from Virginia decades prior.
From Louisville and now living in Chicago, she wanted to have an exhibit here, and 18 months ago made contact through friends and family.
Now, her 34 works of light, metal and glass — sculptures she calls “lumieres” — will be in Trigg County for the next two months.
Her favorite of the showcase, one she started last year after getting the go ahead from JMAM officials, is called “Home is Over Me.”
Major said she’s been a light artist for nearly 15 years, but didn’t first turn to the medium.
Art, she said, should be “for everyone and by everyone.”
Friday’s reception runs until 6 PM, with a presentation planned at 4:30 PM.
Then, on Saturday at 1 PM, families and friends are invited to bring one-to-three pieces of glass they would like to see illuminated with special LEDs. Two pieces, she said, can be presented at once, creating a unique spray of light on the walls, where photos can then be taken.
More programming is planned for the show’s two-month window.
