Three political newcomers came away with Republican magisterial nominations during Tuesday night’s Primary election in Trigg County, when JP Shemwell captured the Fifth District nod, Trey Lancaster the Fourth District, and Josh Adams the Third District.

His wife, Betsy, his daughter, Hattie, and his mother-in-law, Annette, all by his side in the Trigg County Justice Center, Shemwell knows he has large shoes to fill with Alana Baker-Dunn stepping away from the seat.

However, he has been attending fiscal court meetings for awhile now, and is ready to step in for Caledonia and the overall community.

Meetings, he added, “have been a lot to take in and learn.”

Cerulean’s seat, the Fourth District, wound up being contentious, with Lancaster topping Greg Goodwin and John “Rayme” Hopson 124-104-56, respectively, as citizens had three options. A write-in candidate, Andrea Jo King, filed on February 13, and the two will oppose each other in November.

Trigg County’s lone city seat, currently owned by Cameron Sumner, went to Josh Adams, who defeated Jon Goodwin 208-147.

A former Cadiz-Trigg County Planning & Zoning Commission member and Trigg County Class of 2002 graduate, Adams delivered a statement via social media, noting the “support, encouragement, and votes mean more to [him] than words can express.”

No Democrats filed for these seats, and Independent candidates have until 4 PM Tuesday, June 4 to enter their names on the ballot for the November general election.

As for statewide races in Trigg County:

+ For U.S. Senator, current KY Congressman Andy Barr topped former state Attorney General and governor candidate Daniel Cameron 1,506 to 615. Barr earned the state’s Republican nomination, and will face Charles Booker this fall. Booker, however, did not carry Trigg County. Former senate candidate Amy McGrath did.

+ James Comer, who is rumored to be running for KY governor at the completion of Andy Beshear’s two terms, handily earned Trigg County’s electorate in the race for 1st Congressional Representative, with 2,091 of 2,450 votes. Comer also earned the state’s Republican nomination.
