Each graduation, officials with Trigg County Schools want nothing more than celebrate their seniors with honors, praise and scholarship.

As such, discussions are underway for a new — one that would forever honor not only the student, but the lifelong educator and coach in the community for which it will be named.

During last Wednesday’s Board of Education working session, Superintendent Dr. Rex Booth and Board Chair Jo Alyce Harper confirmed that the “Jim Wallace Legacy” Award is in the works — albeit begrudgingly from the humble man of Between the Rivers.

Booth said the next steps involve “what the selection committee would look like,” and when the award’s start date would be.

As its namesake, Wallace has intimated to Booth that he would like to serve on the selection committee, but criteria and the overall process need to be clear.

Harper noted that a lot of scholarship and general award nominations have already been distributed to this year’s class, and several deadlines have already passed — or are nearly approaching.

All agreed that the committee needed to be formed, and then meet, before the end of this 2025-26 academic year, and several names were bandied — including current board members, retired coach and current magistrate Mike Wright, retired Kentucky Supreme Court Justice Bill Cunningham, retired Superintendent Tim McGinnis, Genesis Express patriarch George Radford, and some others.

Board member Mindy Hargrove also noted that the award’s criteria, when decided, doesn’t necessarily need to be sports based, but character based.

Board Attorney Jack Lackey said “those who know Jim Wallace” make sense for the committee.

The Trigg County Schools Board of Education meets in regular session Thursday night.
