Mark Alton Wells died peacefully at Skyline Medical Center in Nashville, TN surrounded by his family on Wednesday, December 31, 2025.
Mark was born April 28, 1953, in Louisville, Kentucky to Alton and Pat Wells. He had an older brother, Edward Louis Wells, and a younger sister, Carol Susan Wells Hilbert. All members of Mark’s family have predeceased him.
Mark graduated from Fern Creek High School in 1971. He was a student athlete, playing varsity football and basketball. He attended the University of Kentucky and graduated with a Master’s Degree in Economics.
After college, Mark traveled the United States doing various jobs such as working as a maintenance assistant at Yellowstone National Park and working in the sawmills in Washington state before returning to Louisville.
Mark moved to Hopkinsville and became a successful businessman, creating Super Lawn & Garden. Later in 1990, he began a new endeavor, Mr. Mulch, a mulch manufacturing business, both retail and wholesale. During this time, he was also the owner and operator of American Concrete from 1993 to 1997. In 2010, Mark retired from the business world and spent some time working on and enjoying his beloved farm.
In 2014, Mark felt called to public service and ran for and was elected as Magistrate of District 2 on the Christian County Fiscal Court. He loved this job as much or more than any other. He enjoyed working with his fellow magistrates to improve Christian County in so many ways. The county’s assistance in refurbishing the Alhambra Theater was one of his favorite accomplishments.
Mark was very active in his community. He served on the Trail of Tears Commission for many years and was a past President. He worked tirelessly to have the Trail of Tears annual Pow Wow become a destination event. He worked with the Convention & Visitors Bureau to help put Christian County, Kentucky on the map as a great place to visit.
Mark was a member of First Christian Church (DOC) for over 35 years. He sang in the choir, served as Moderator in 2023, served on the Property Committee for many years, and was on the Personnel Committee. His favorite volunteer efforts were cooking for the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen each Wednesday, May through October. He and his happy cohorts gathered each week for fellowship and service, and he loved it.
Mark was an avid hunter and fisherman. When he was growing up, he hunted pheasant in Nebraska with his father and brother. He enjoyed rabbit hunting and bird hunting with his friends here in Christian County. His fishing adventures included fishing the oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, traveling with friends to fish in Canada, and his annual Fish Camp at Kentucky Lake with his three good friends of over 30 years.
Mark never met a stranger, loved jokes (off-color, the better), worked furiously in business and in life, loved to travel, and loved his family.
Mark is survived by his wife of 33 years, Jane. Though he had no children of his own, he is survived by and was loved by his inherited daughters, Ellen Casey (Todd) and Sarah Hayes (Tom), and six grandchildren and a new great granddaughter.
Memorial gifts may be made to First Christian Church (Nada Fuqua Music Fund) or the Salvation Army.
A celebration of life will be held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, January 10, 2026 at First Christian Church with Pastor Glen Schory, Rev. Dr. Thomas Steiner, Rev. Catherine DeMoss, and Rev.
