A Hopkinsville man was arrested on drug trafficking and other charges after fleeing from police in Madisonville during a traffic stop on I-69 Thursday morning.
Police say just before 11 a.m., an officer stopped a car driving erratically on the interstate near the 108 turn around and noticed a strong smell of marijuana, as well as marijuana debris on the driver, 24-year-old Shaphane Stowe, who showed signs of impairment.
While awaiting backup, police say Stowe sped off, nearly hitting the officer, and then threw a bag containing suspected drug from his car during the pursuit. Police say Stowe eventually stopped near the 117-mile marker and was arrested without further incident.
During a search, police say they found a large amount of suspected meth inside and outside the car where the bag was thrown, along with marijuana in Stowe’s possession.
Stowe was charged with careless driving, first-degree fleeing or evading police, first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, trafficking marijuana, second-degree wanton endangerment of a police officer, and operating a motor vehicle under the influence. He was lodged in the Hopkins County Jail.
