A group of special education students in Christian County is getting the chance to showcase their artistic talents this summer. A new program through Arts for All is giving these students an opportunity to create and display their work in a public setting.
On July 7th, the students’ work will be displayed during a special reception at the Alhambra Theatre in Hopkinsville.
Lynnea Jellison, a special education teacher with Christian County Schools, says the student artists range from elementary school to grade 14. She coordinated the event with help from Henrietta Kemp of the Hopkinsville Art Guild.
The artwork that will be displayed was created during a recent week-long art camp with a project focusing on Kentucky animals.
Students will receive certificates during the one-hour reception, Families are invited to attend and celebrate their children’s creativity.
Artist and teacher Paula Gieseke is helping lead the program and says art gives students a strong sense of identity and community.
Gieseke says the experience is therapeutic for many students and helps them develop key life skills.
She says the students completed a wide range of projects throughout the week.
The community is welcome to attend the July 7th event, which organizers hope will become an annual tradition.
