Cadiz Council Considering Payroll-Insurance Tax Hikes

Cadiz City Council will vote on proposed increases in the city payroll tax and the insurance premium tax during a future meeting.

City clerk Brian Ahart told council the proposal from Mayor Todd King is to raise the payroll tax from the current rate of 1.5 percent to 1.9 percent and increase the insurance premium tax from 6 percent to either 8 or 10 percent.

Cadiz City Council members discussed the proposals with Mayor King instructing City Attorney Allen Wilson to draft the proposed ordinances for a possible future vote on the tax increases.

When asked by the News Edge why there is a need for an increase in the tax rates, City Clerk Brian Ahart said the city is feeling the impact of COVID-19 with revenues down by more than $90,000.

 

Following an executive session, Cadiz City Council approved an incentive package for Hard Luck Coffee that will be located in Cadiz. Mayor Todd King said the business will be located behind the Prickly Peach.

Also during the meeting Cadiz Public Works Director Kerry Fowler announced he will retire at the end of 2021.

Council heard a request for funding assistance from developer Scott Jolly who is working to extend water and other utilities to the land along the U.S. 68 Bypass across from FNB Bank.

Council also approved an amended budget for the 2020-21 fiscal year and the budget for 2021-22. Due to the budget crunch the city is experiencing, no pay raise is included in the budget for city employees next year.

And met in an extended executive session to discuss a personnel issue, with no decision made following the closed meeting.
