Representatives of Census 2020 were on hand at the Christian Fiscal Court meeting Tuesday morning asking for their support and help with the effort to spread the word about the importance and impact of the data collected.
Census Partnership Specialist Kisha Mische touched on some key points in the upcoming Census 2020, which she stated is a constitutional requirement. She said the last Census was in 1990.
She noted billions of dollars in federal funding will be disseminated based on the Census data with the first mailers inviting households to participate going out in March.
She added two weeks after March 12 they will send out an additional invitation and April 1 the official Census forms will be mailed. Two weeks later a reminder message will be going out to households in Christian County.
Mische said what they are trying to get across to individuals is how easy, safe, and important the Census is.

Mische said one of the most undercounted demographics is children 0 to 5 years old, which means if they are missed in the Census 2020 they will not be counted again until the age of 14.

In addition, Mische notes seats in the House of Representatives are based on Census counts and seats could be lost. She said that has happened in the past and could happen after the Census 2020. That’s why she adds it’s significant to educate individuals that it’s coming, it’s safe to participate, how to participate and why it is so important.
