Sherwood Buckner, 66, of the Christian County community, passed away Friday, May 1, 2026, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital.
Born February 17, 1960, in Christian County, he was the son of the late Lionel Buckner and Ethel Pryor Buckner.
Mr. Buckner dedicated 37 years of service to International Paper, now Huhtamaki, where he worked as a machine operator. He was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church in Guthrie, where he was baptized.
Known for his strong work ethic and willingness to help others, Buckner enjoyed fishing, mowing, cooking, and working with his hands. He had a passion for tools, assembling projects, and remodeling, and was often described as a handyman who was always ready to lend a helping hand.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five siblings: Elizabeth Carlisle, William Buckner, Bernice Holmes, Ruth Buckner, and Donald Buckner.
He is survived by his son, Shermarkice (Erica) McGowan; a stepson, Antonio (April) McGowan; six siblings, Walter (Earline) Buckner, Jessye Torian, Eula “Edie” Buckner, Lena (Donald) Acree, Shelia (Andre) Gray, and John “Pedi” (Cynthia) Buckner; five grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Visitation will be held Friday, May 8, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Gamble Funeral Home, with funeral services to follow at noon. Burial will follow at Cave Springs Cemetery.
