A native of Clarksville, TN, she was born August 28, 1957, the daughter of the late Nicholas Hunter Meriwether and the late Patty Elizabeth (Haley) Cook.
Barbara “Nan” or “Aunt Barbara” Lamkin was a highly skilled travel agent for many years, having worked in Clarksville, TN, Hopkinsville, and finishing her career at Fort Campbell, KY. Her clients knew they were in good hands when she booked their accommodations.
Barbara excelled at homemaking skills learned from her mother and grandmother. She was perhaps best known for her kitchen skills, which were greatly appreciated by anyone fortunate enough to sit at her table or receive one of her many plates sent out to friends and loved ones. Her home, always open and warm, held the mixed aromas of something good on the stove and expensive perfume. If UK was playing basketball, you could find Barbara cheering for her team, decked out in UK blue. She loved being fabulous, and her favorite color was either “sparkle” or Kentucky blue.
Without question, her favorite role was that of “Nan”. She and Michael welcomed their first grandchild in 1992, and since then, their home has been filled with an ever-changing assortment of children and their vast array of toys and accessories. All the children who grew up playing in her house, meddling in her make-up, or exploring the backyard and labyrinthian shed know that Nan would make sure you were safe, loved, fed, and taught to behave and mind your manners. She never forgot a birthday or any other special occasion of her babies.
Barbara held firm faith in Jesus Christ as her redeemer and friend. She attended Christ Presbyterian Church in Clarksville until she became homebound. A true “Proverbs Woman,” she was devoted to her Lord, her husband, and every one of her family members.
Survivors include her devoted husband of 49 years, Michael Lamkin; her step-daughters, Paula (Keith) Alves and Shannon Taylor; her brothers, Nick (Cathy) Meriwether and Jeff Meriwether; her grandchildren, Dylan (Haley) Colley, Marley Taylor, Sydney Kircher, and Haily Kircher; her great-grandson, Wallen Colley; her nieces, Tauzzia Meriwether, Amber (Brian) MacLaine, Claire (John) Maher, and Megan Skunza; her nephew, Hunter (Morgan) Meriwether; her great-nieces, Harley Buckley, Avah Kunicki, Rhylan “Dovie” MacLaine, Zoey Meriwether, and Delaney Meriwether; her great-nephews, Robert Kunicki, Chayton Anderson, Ryan Skunza, Jayden Skunza, and Michael Maher; her great-great-nephew, Ryatt Kunicki; and her special lifetime friend, Linda Wease.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
