Be On the Lookout for Large Implements With Spring Planting Season Underway

Trigg County farmers are in the heart of a busy spring planting season, with corn and soybean planting, fertilizer application, herbicide spraying, and pasture management all underway across the county, according to Trigg County Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension Agent David Fourqurean.

He says the full range of spring farm work is now taking place, which means drivers should be prepared to encounter large farm equipment on county roads.

Fourqurean says if you stop to allow equipment to pass, you should avoid pulling up across from mailboxes, signs, or other narrow points that make it harder for wide machinery to get through.

In addition to heavy field activity, Fourqurean said dry conditions remain a growing concern for local producers. He said the area is running about eight inches below normal rainfall, with recent drought monitor maps showing severe drought conditions developing in southern portions of Trigg, Christian, and Todd counties.

Fourqurean said the lack of rainfall is especially affecting pasture growth, which has slowed significantly. He encouraged livestock producers using rotational grazing to “flash graze” pastures for just a few days before moving cattle to another area, rather than grazing fields down too short and delaying regrowth even further.

Looking ahead, Fourqurean also promoted an upcoming Breeding Soundness Exam clinic scheduled for April 25 at Little River Veterinary Clinic. He said the clinic is designed to help cattle producers make sure bulls are ready for breeding season.
