Sanctuary Inc. is encouraging residents across the Pennyrile region to take part in “Chalk the Walk Week,” a community-driven effort aimed at raising awareness and showing support for survivors of sexual violence.

The event, scheduled for April 20–24, is part of Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, a nationwide campaign observed each April to promote prevention, education and survivor support.

Here’s the premise: Individuals, families and businesses are invited to use sidewalk chalk to create messages of encouragement, hope and solidarity in visible public spaces.

Executive Director Heather Lancaster said the broader goal is to meet people where they are and create opportunities for engagement across the community.

“This affects more people than we know,” Lancaster said. “We want people to feel supported and know there is a place they can come to for healing.”

Sanctuary Inc., which serves as the region’s sexual assault resource center, provides confidential services including crisis intervention, advocacy and prevention education across a nine-county area. The organization supports more than 100 survivors annually.

“Chalk the Walk” is designed as an accessible way for the public to get involved, requiring minimal resources while helping amplify awareness messages. In past years, community members have shared phrases such as “You are not alone” and “You matter,” reinforcing support for survivors in everyday spaces.

The event is one of several programs Sanctuary is hosting throughout April, alongside educational exhibits, awareness campaigns and community partnerships aimed at reducing stigma and promoting prevention.

“These events are about education, but also about showing that communities can be part of the solution,” Lancaster said.

Advocates emphasize that participation does not require large gestures, noting that small actions — from attending events to sharing messages of support — can contribute to broader cultural change.

“Awareness leads to action,” Lancaster said. “If people understand what sexual assault is, how it impacts individuals and families, and how to respond, they can help create safer communities.”

Community members interested in participating in Chalk the Walk Week can find more information through Sanctuary Inc.’s website and social media platforms.
