April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and state officials are putting out an urgent call for volunteers in 54 Kentucky counties to help protect the area’s most vulnerable children.
The Kentucky Citizen Foster Care Review Board is currently seeking local volunteers to advocate for children in the foster care system. These boards play a critical role by reviewing cases of dependency, neglect, and abuse to ensure children are receiving the services they need.
State Vice Chair Mika Tyler says community members play a direct role in improving outcomes for these children by making recommendations to local courts and the Cabinet for Health and Family Services.
Volunteers typically meet virtually just one day a month. Applicants must undergo a background check and complete six hours of training.
Although the program is seeking help in dozens of counties across the commonwealth, there is a specific need for new members right here in Trigg County.
After completing training, potential volunteers are recommended by the Citizen Foster Care Review Board for appointment to the board by the chief judge of the local Family or District Court.
