I-24 in southern Christian County will have several months of lane restrictions beginning Wednesday as the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet starts a major pavement reconstruction project near the Kentucky-Tennessee state line.
According to state transportation officials, westbound I-24 will be reduced to one lane just east of the Kentucky Welcome Center. Traffic will then cross over to the eastbound side of the interstate at about mile point 92. From there, both eastbound and westbound traffic will share the eastbound lanes between mile points 92 and 88, with temporary barriers separating opposing traffic.
The traffic pattern is expected to remain in place through the end of July.
The work is part of a $25 million interstate rehabilitation project that will fully remove and rebuild both westbound lanes of I-24 from mile point 93 near the state line to mile point 88. Transportation officials say the existing concrete pavement in that section will be replaced with new asphalt. The project also includes resurfacing the westbound I-24 bridge over the West Fork Red River at mile point 91. The overall project is scheduled for completion by mid-August, weather permitting.
