He was born on January 8, 1962, in Bangor, Maine, to Harry Clifford Thomas and Inga Grünaug Thomas.
Wayne graduated from Trigg County High School in 1980. He went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree from Murray State University and later obtained his Master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma. In 1986, he enlisted in the United States Army, dedicating 21 years of honorable service to his country and retiring with the esteemed rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During his military career, he served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and earned the prestigious Bronze Star for his bravery and dedication.
After retiring from the military, Wayne continued his commitment to service through education. He became a respected teacher, athletic director, assistant football coach, tennis coach, and assistant principal at Hopkinsville High School. He had a passion for guiding and mentoring young minds, leaving an indelible mark on countless students.
Wayne was an avid golfer, known for his exceptional skills on the green. As a passionate sports fan, he held deep loyalties to the University of Kentucky football and basketball teams, the Baltimore Orioles, and the Green Bay Packers. In addition to his passion for sports, Wayne enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was renowned as a grill master and found immense joy in cooking. His loyal dog, Stella, was his constant companion.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Wayne is survived by his children, Kirk Thomas of Louisville, Kentucky, Rachael Thomas of Portland, Oregon, and Cliff Thomas of Cincinnati, Ohio; his mother, Inga Grünaug Thomas (John Handegan) of Cadiz, Kentucky; his brother, Robert “Sonny” Thomas (Debbie) of North Carolina, and his sister, Susan Jayne (Otis) of Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Arrangements are being handled by Goodwin Funeral Home, Inc., 138 Main Street in Cadiz, where the family will receive friends after 4:00 PM on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.
Funeral services will be at Goodwin Funeral Home at 11:00 AM, Thursday, April 2, 2026, with Rev. Jamus Redd officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West in Hopkinsville.
