Kentucky’s 2026 spring turkey hunting season is approaching with encouraging signs for hunters, as state biologists report improving turkey populations despite a harsh winter.

According to the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, recent brood surveys show higher numbers of poults and stronger reproduction, with more young birds expected to reach prime hunting age this spring.

Officials say turkey numbers have steadily rebounded over the past five years, supported by increased nest success, higher poult survival rates, and solid hen survival. Research in western Kentucky also showed survival rates exceeding expectations, along with a boost from the 2024 emergence of Brood XIX cicadas, which provided an abundant food source.

Last year, hunters telechecked more than 30,000 birds, and biologists say this season could see another strong harvest. The youth-only season is set for April 4–5, followed by the general season from April 18 through May 10. Hunters may harvest two bearded birds for the season, limited to one per day.

Officials remind hunters to review regulations, including licensing, harvest reporting, and legal hunting hours, before heading into the field.
