The Christian County Literacy Council is running two major events this spring—its longtime Vidalia onion fundraiser and the annual writing contest honoring Hopkinsville native Bell Hooks.

Executive Director Francene Gilmer says the onion sale is now underway, with pre-orders open through April 15th.

Orders can be placed through the literacy council’s Facebook page or by calling their office.

Gilmer says the fundraiser has become a staple in the community over the years.

Proceeds from the sale go directly toward literacy programs across Christian County, including the annual spelling bee, classroom support and book access.

Gilmer says they’re also launching a new summer project to keep kids reading even when school is out.

At the same time, the literacy council is accepting entries for the Bell Hooks Memorial Writing Contest, which continues to grow each year.

Entries include poetry, short stories, and essays, and each submission will be published in a collected journal.

This year’s theme is “community,” something Gilmer says reflects the work of Bell Hooks herself.
