Temporary Weight Limits in Effect on Several District 2 Bridges Starting Jan. 21

The Kentucky State Transportation Cabinet is implementing temporary weight limits on several bridges across the state starting Wednesday, January 21, to enhance highway safety after recent engineering inspections.

According to officials, engineers conducted federally required reviews of bridge load ratings to assess shear stress on support beams. They say bridges found to be vulnerable will have temporary weight limits until they can be reinforced.

They say that most single-unit vehicles—like cars, pickups, SUVs, and some delivery trucks—will not be affected, but the weight limits could restrict 40-ton trucks and other heavy vehicles.

Officials said the Transportation Cabinet is already developing plans to reinforce or repair affected bridges and lift weight restrictions as soon as possible.

I-169
Southbound bridge at 7.5 mile point

Single Units (Type I, II, III) – 2-3 axles: 20 tons; 4-5 axles: 21 tons; 5-6 axles: 24 tons
Type IV (semi tractor trailers): 36 tons

Hopkins County
I-69
North and southbound bridges at 125.9 mile point (over KY 138 at Slaughters exit)

Single Units (Type I, II, III) – 2-3 axles: 16 tons; 4-5 axles: 17 tons; 5-6 axles: 18 tons
Type IV (semi tractor trailers): 19 tons
Type 3-3 (semi double trailer): 24 tons
U.S. 62
Bridge at 22.2 mile point

Single Units (Type I, II, III) – 2-3 axles: 23 tons; 4-5 axles: 24 tons; 5-6 axles: 25 tons
Type IV (semi tractor trailers): 26 tons
