A traffic stop on a stolen vehicle led to a pursuit and an attempted carjacking on Fort Campbell Boulevard Thursday afternoon.
Hopkinsville Police say they attempted to stop a stolen vehicle, and the driver, 20-year-old Donald Brown of Clarksville, fled, almost colliding with other vehicles, before hitting a tractor-trailer at the intersection of Fort Campbell Boulevard and Eagle Way.
Police say Brown and his passenger, 19-year-old Quintin Benson of Triangle, Virginia, fled on foot and tried to take a car from a woman in the parking lot of the JennieCare Urgent Clinic before they were tased and taken into custody.
Hopkinsville resident Hannah Reeves was in her vehicle in the parking lot of JennieCare Urgent Care when she heard the crash and saw two people run toward her car. She said her first instinct was to protect her 10-month-old child in the back seat.
She says one of the suspects tried to enter her locked vehicle before they were taken into custody by officers. Reeves says relying on her maternal instincts may have altered the intended outcome of the suspects.
Reeves had nothing but praise for the job done by Hopkinsville Police and others involved in the pursuit and subsequent arrests.
She says the work of police officers is largely unrecognized, which is why she felt it was important to offer praise where it was deserved.
Police say no one was injured in the pursuit, and Brown and Benson were armed with a gun.
Nashville Police say the car was reported stolen on Wednesday and the keys are belived to have been left inside.
Law enforcement was notified of the stolen vehicle in the area by city cameras.
Brown is charged with first-degree criminal mischief, resisting arrest, possession of burglary tools, carjacking, two counts of first-degree fleeing or evading police, two counts of first-degree wanton endangerment, and three counts of receiving stolen property. Benson is charged with first-degree fleeing or evading police, first-degree wanton endangerment of a police officer, receiving stolen property, and tampering with physical evidence.
