U.S. 41 near Trenton will remain closed through the weekend following Tuesday’s CSX train derailment.
Todd County Emergency Management Director Ash Groves announced that officials are now targeting a Monday reopening, pending final cleanup and safety inspections.
The delay is being attributed to landfill closures, which slowed the removal of non-hazardous debris. To expedite the process, CSX has secured an additional landfill that will operate through the weekend, allowing hauling crews to work around the clock to clear the wreckage.
Before the highway can safely reopen, crews must remove significant mud and dirt from the pavement through mechanical sweeping and industrial washing. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will conduct final safety inspections once the cleaning is complete.
