Trigg County Candidate Filings After Week One Filing Window

With the election filing window just over a week old, two positions in Trigg County are already contested.

Two people have filed to run in the race for sheriff and jailer, according to information from the county clerk’s office and the state secretary of state.

Sheriff Aaron Acree is facing opposition in the Republican May Primary from former deputy and state trooper Mike Sandbrink.

Jailer James Hughes is also facing opposition in the May primary from a former deputy as Troy Belt filed in the Republican race.

Sam Carter has filed to run as a Republican in the race for Trigg County judge-executive, while Mitzi Thomas-Lawson has filed to run for mayor of Cadiz.

Two incumbents have filed for another term on Trigg County Fiscal Court — Mike Wright in District 1 and Barry Littlejohn in District 2. They are joined by newcomer Greg Goodwin, who is seeking the District 4 seat.

County Clerk Carmen Finley and County Attorney Randall Braboy have also filed for another term as has James Mullen for the Trigg County School Board from Division 1. Mullen was appointed in September to fill the unexpired term of Charlene Sheehan.

Several people have announced their intent to run for office, but had not filed as of Wednesday afternoon.

The deadline to file to run in the May Primary Election is January 9.
