For the first time since 2018, Cadiz Mayor Todd King will face political opposition in November 2026.
Wednesday afternoon, Mitzi Thomas-Lawson announced her candidacy for the position — as she is hoping her experience as a licensed clinical social worker, military officer and leader with 24 years of service, and her work as a federal employee can be of use.
She said she is committed to “advancing community development” while supporting growth in Cadiz, and her priorities include:
+ Balancing budgetary priorities for the city
+ Fostering transparent communication and community engagement with residents
+ Promoting economic development and supporting local business and entrepreneurship
+ And renewing local commitment and support in the revitalization of the Cadiz Historical Business District
Thomas-Lawson’s husband, Tom, serves as the Cadiz-Trigg County Planning Commission’s board chair.
The City of Cadiz has never had a woman as mayor.
King, meanwhile, is the long-time local owner of King’s Funeral Home. He served on the Cadiz City Council prior to his first mayoral term in 2014, where he also ran unopposed following Lyn Bailey declining another run.
In 2018, King took 84% of the vote against Guy Gosnell, and carried all three precincts.
He ran unopposed in 2022, and in January of this year, he announced his intent to seek re-election in 2026 — citing a desire to continue growth and improvements in Cadiz.
Unlike Hopkinsville and other Kentucky municipalities, the Cadiz mayoral race is non-partisan.
