A traffic stop for speeding and reckless driving led to drug charges for a Cadiz man Sunday night.

Trigg County Sheriff’s deputies say they stopped a vehicle driven by 33-year-old Jewan Irving on Hopkinsville Road for speeding and not maintaining his lane, leading to Irving admitting his license was suspended.

Deputies say a bag of white powder and an alcohol beverage container could be seen in the vehicle, and Irving and his passenger, 30-year-old Maurice Powell, were taken out of the car.

Powell was reportedly seen dropping something, then putting his foot over the top of it, before being asked to move his foot. Deputies say he then scraped a large amount of white powder substance believed to be cocaine across the ground and kicked something under a vehicle.

After a search of the vehicle, deputies say synthetic marijuana and a digital scale were found.

Powell was arrested and charged with trafficking in synthetic drugs, tampering with physical evidence, and trafficking cocaine. Irving was also arrested and charged with driving on a DUI-suspended license second offense, improperly on the left side of the road, and possession of an open alcohol beverage container in a motor vehicle prohibited.
