An accidental call to law enforcement led to an Oak Grove man and woman being charged with criminal abuse on Wednesday afternoon.
Oak Grove Police say they went to the home on Pembroke Oak Grove Road for an accidental 911 call, and 34-year-old Matthew Carter and a 2-year-old child who was naked and covered in feces came to the door.
When asked to put clothing on the child, he reportedly said he did not have any.
Police say the home was covered in trash, feces, bugs, and spoiled food, and to get into the home, you had to climb onto trash.
The 2-year-old and a second child under 12 years old, along with a child over 12, were reportedly sleeping in the living room. Police say there was no working restroom, so they were using containers stored in the living room.
There was reportedly no air conditioning in the home since 2022, and the children had last showered in August.
Matthew Carter and the mother, 33-year-old Stacie Carter, were both arrested and charged with three counts of second-degree criminal abuse.
