Salvation Army Looks At Shelter Rebuild

The topic of homelessness is one familiar to Hopkinsville and the only shelter is 60 years old with more beds than it was originally intended for. The Salvation Army has been looking at how to address this problem for years – meeting with community stakeholders and conducting a feasibility study.

Senior Divisional Resource Development Director Chris Head says the housing program is helpful to the community, not just because it helps individuals but because businesses benefit.

click to download audioThe new building, which would bring the shelter and housing services under one roof, started as a 12 million dollar project, but they have cut it back to 8.5 million.

click to download audioHead says the Salvation Army will not allow construction on the project until at least 80 percent of the funding is in the bank. He presented the consultant’s findings to the Hopkinsville City Council Tuesday night.
