Squealin’ on the Square Barbecue Winners Serve Up Smoke and Plenty of Flavor

The smell of smoked meat and summer fun filled the air in downtown Hopkinsville over the weekend at the 7th Annual Squealin’ on the Square BBQ competition.

Ten teams fired up their grills, battling it out for bragging rights, a trophy—and a $250 cash prize.

In the chicken category, first place went to Maurice Jesse and Mitch Smith, whose team name is also a mindset—called “Bet On Yourself.”

This was the team’s first time entering this particular competition—but not their first win.

From Memphis to Louisville, the brothers say there’s nothing quite like winning on home turf.

In the pork chop and pork ribs categories, it was New Work Fellowship taking top honors—and for them, head chef Kendall Joiner says this year brought a first.

Team member Mark Claxton said success came down to teamwork—and a good old-fashioned test run.

Beyond competition, New Work Fellowship brings their culinary skills to the church and the community year-round.

The Mayor’s Award, a special recognition from the city, went to G’s Barbecue.

And while trophies were handed out, the real win was in the camaraderie—served with smoke, seasoning, and smiles.

A sizzling summer tradition in Hopkinsville—where competition is friendly, and the barbecue is serious.
