Challenge House teams up with AT&T for summer youth program

A summer youth program in Hopkinsville is helping teens explore career paths and learn valuable life skills.

At Challenge House 7, a program sponsored by AT&T is giving local teens a hands-on experience in the working world.

click to download audioEach summer, around 25 teens take part. Community leaders, business owners, and professionals volunteer their time to give presentations—ranging from law and healthcare to hairdressing and construction.

click to download audioThis year’s program runs June 16th through 19th from 1 to 5 p.m. Littlefield says punctuality is a must.

click to download audioThe program also focuses on breaking teens out of their comfort zones, grouping participants from different neighborhoods together to build independence and teamwork.

click to download audioThanks to donations from AT&T, each graduate receives a computer and $200 after completing the program—including 16 hours of job shadowing in their chosen field.

click to download audioThe program ends with a graduation celebration, complete with a buffet and family in attendance. But Littlefield says the most important lesson is about self-reliance.
