True crime fans in Hopkinsville will have a chance to put their knowledge to the test while supporting a good cause this Friday.
The Hopkinsville Police Department is hosting its first-ever True Crime Trivia Night on May 9 at Hopkinsville Brewing Company, with proceeds benefiting the local Crime Stoppers program.
“We are hosting our first of hopefully many true crime trivia with Crime Stoppers this Friday, May 9th at the brewery,” said Royale Marfil, public information officer for the Hopkinsville Police Department. “We will be there from 6 to 8.”
The event will feature teams of up to six people, with a $150 entry fee per team. That fee includes food and drinks for participants.
“Everybody gets a drink ticket and you get two large three topping pizzas with everything,” Marfil said. “So we give you food, we get you some drinks, and you’re there to do some trivia.”
While Marfil didn’t give away any specific questions, she hinted that topics may include infamous figures like Jeffrey Dahmer and John Wayne Gacy.
“I don’t know about specific questions, but we would probably ask questions about Jeffrey Dahmer, Gacy maybe,” she said.
The trivia night also serves a bigger purpose—raising money for Crime Stoppers cash rewards, which are offered for anonymous tips that help solve crimes.
“As police officers, we cannot be in the city every second of every day,” Marfil said. “So that’s where we really have to rely on community members to kind of be vigilant as well. And if they see any criminal or suspicious activity, that’s where they can call in Crime Stoppers anonymously. And with that information, if that leads to an arrest of somebody, then they are eligible for a cash reward.”
Marfil assures that all tips to Crime Stoppers are completely anonymous.
“Our tip line is all anonymous. We do not know any names or phone numbers—all of it is caller driven,” she said. “So if you give me a tip and some information, I then in turn give you instructions to call me back at a certain date at a certain time.”
So far, the department has 6 teams signed up for Friday’s event.
“We’ve got plenty of room. We’re accepting up to 14 teams,” Marfil said. “All the information will be on the Hopkinsville Police Department Facebook or the Crime Stoppers page.”
