Good Turnout At Hopkinsville Veterans Day Parade To Honor Local Heroes

A number of veterans took part in the Hopkinsville Veterans Parade Saturday morning which started at the War Memorial Building on Main Street and concluded at the Justice Center, where the program was held on the front steps.

Holly Hampton, the chair of the Military Affairs Committee, extended a warm welcome to the veterans and their families. She also thanked the planning committee, volunteers, and elected officials who contributed to the success of the parade and ceremony. Additionally, Hampton conveyed her appreciation to the veterans for their selfless service.

click to download audioThe Pledge of Allegiance was led by Commander John Brame of VFW Post 1913, followed by the presentation of the colors by the 101st Airborne Color Guard. Once the colors were presented, Rachel Cavanaugh took the stage and delivered the National Anthem.

Chamber of Commerce Director of Military Affairs Shannon Lane asked Hopkinsville Mayor J.R. Knight Jr., Hopkinsville City Councilman Don Marsh, and Christian County Judge-Executive Jerry Gilliam to present the Veterans Day Proclamation to Brame and Commander of the Disabled American Veterans William Hadley. Mayor Knight and Marsh expressed their appreciation for the veterans at the ceremony.

click to download audioUniversity Heights Academy was presented the traveling trophy for the school with the most participation in the Veterans parade, and Sinking Fork Elementary School was presented with the Most Spirit Award.

Following the award presentations, Brame invited all the veterans to the VFW Post 1913 on Skyline Drive for chili, sandwiches, brownies and ice cream.

VFW Chaplain Richard Cooper led the invocation followed by Hampton’s closing remarks.
