GOOD NEWS: Trigg’s Geary Earns UK’s Singletary Scholarship

Ashley Geary, a senior at Trigg County High School, found out earlier this week she is receiving the “Otis A. Singletary” scholarship award — in what ends up being a full-ride opportunity to the University of Kentucky in Lexington.

Planning to study engineering while in the Golden Triangle, Geary earned this scholarship through competitive means, and had to maintain no less than a 3.80 GPA with at least a 33 ACT or 1450 composite SAT.

Nabbing in-state tuition and a housing stipend, the scholarship is considered one of the most prestigious for UK. According to university officials, these scholars have the potential to “lead lives of intellect, integrity and service in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and the world.”

The Singletary Scholarship Experience specifically cultivates leadership skills, including direct service-learning, dynamic classroom discussion, targeted conversations with community leaders, and opportunities for collaborative social entrepreneurship.

The full-tuition award is four years, and the housing stipend is two years, and also allows admission to the Lewis Honors College with enrollment for a three-course mentor experience — all of which are 1-credit courses designed to “engage [scholars] in doing service and critically thinking about it.”
