Forest Service Opens Five LBL Areas For Archery Hunting

Beginning today, the USDA Forest Service is allowing archery deer hunting in select areas of the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area — areas that are typically off-limits to such hunting, but are now in need of wildlife conservation and population management.

Prospective hunters can now access the Southern Nature Watch Demonstration Area, Brandon Spring Group Center, and campgrounds in Hillman Ferry, Piney and Energy Lake, through January 16.

Archers are encouraged to take antlerless deer in these zones.

John Westbrook, environmental stewardship staff officer with the USDA Forest Service, noted that opening these areas is a “mutual benefit,” that helps officials manage deer populations, while offering more access to hunters.

Hunters will have access within facility boundaries and away from campsites and structures. Maintenance staff will continue to work at these facilities throughout the winter, and hunters are advised to use extra caution in these areas because of such.

Hunting is not permitted within 150 yards of any road, facility, building, occupied area — or within 200 yards of any wildlife refuges. Those aged 16 and older must possess all state required licenses and permits for the state being hunted.

LBL Hunter Use Permits can be purchased online 24/7 under Reservations and Permits, or year-round at Golden Pond Visitor Center and Wranglers Campground. Year-round camping opportunities are available at Wranglers and self-service campgrounds. Camping is also permitted in basic and dispersed camping areas with the purchase of a basic/dispersed camping permit.
