Trigg County Population Continues Upward Climb

Trigg County’s population continues to increase which could see it reach a 110-year high by the middle of the decade.

Estimates released recently by the U.S. Census Bureau showed Trigg County with 14,192 residents on July 1, 2021, which is up 124 from the 2020 Census total.

In 2010, Trigg County had 14,339 residents. The 2020 Census showed a decline of 278 residents, making the first decade decline since 1970. The county reached a high of 14,539 citizens in 1910.

Trigg County was one of 43 Kentucky counties to increase in population from 2021 compared to the 2020 Census.

The population estimates from last July showed Trigg County’s population made up of 22-percent under the age of 18 and 23-percent over 65. The state average is 22-percent under 18 and 17-percent over 65.

In terms of race, Trigg County is 89-percent white, seven-percent Black, and 2.6-percent Hispanic according to the estimates.

79-percent of Trigg County’s residents own their home at a value of $156,000 compared to the state average of 67-percent ownership with an average home value of $147,000.

The average rent in Trigg County is less than both the state and national average, according to the Census. The average rent in the county is $567 a month compared to Kentucky’s $783 and the national average of $1,096.

The numbers show 84-percent of Trigg County’s homes with at least one computer and 88-percent with a high school diploma — both at or near the state average.

Residents of Trigg County drive an average of 25 minutes to work each day, which is one minute longer than the state average.

The median household income of county residents is $50,980 which is about $1,300 less than the state average. However, the per capita income for Trigg County residents is $26,953 which is $2,170 below the state average and over $8,400 below the national average.

As a result, 16.7-percent of the county’s residents live at or below the poverty level, compared to the state average of 14.9-percent and the national average of 11-percent.

The Census Bureau releases population estimates each year after it gathers demographic data through various methods.
