While gas prices have inched down in the final week of 2021, the price at the pump is nowhere where it was in the final week of 2020.
Triple-A reported the average price of gas in the western part of Kentucky at $2.86 a gallon, which is three cents lower than last week. Prices ranged from $2.73 in Owensboro to $3.00 in Louisville. In Hopkinsville, the average price per gallon is $2.90.
Triple-A said gas prices fluctuated over the past few days as fears of an omicron-driven economic slowdown were countered by news of a severe fire at a major oil refinery. The recent steady decline in pump prices has slowed, with the national average for a gallon of gas falling two cents on the week to $3.28.
One year ago, the average price per gallon in western Kentucky was $2.07 a gallon. In Hopkinsville, it was $2.02 per gallon.
Triple-A went on to say that falling demand and increased supply would typically support larger drops in pump prices, but fluctuations in the price of crude oil have helped to keep pump prices elevated.
