Representatives Dossett And Thomas Concerned About Pre-School Masks

Ninth district State Representative Myron Dossett and Eighth District counterpart Walker Thomas are concerned about the recent order concerning masks for younger children.

Dossett told WTVQ leading up to the start of school. local school districts and daycares carefully considered whether they would require mandatory face coverings. He said although the Governor May not agree with the choices made by local officials he should respect their authority.

Representative Thomas says forcing children to mask up during these extreme temperatures is one of many reasons for concern. Thomas says students riding on school buses have to endure temperatures in the 90s and heat indexes in triple digits. The mask mandate also applies to children in private daycare facilities. Thomas says children as young as two could see a delay in their social communication, mental development, and cognitive skills because they are in the process of learning letters, words and speech.

State Representatives Myron Dossett, Walker Thomas, Lynn Bechler, and State Senator Whitney Westerfield sent a letter to Governor Beshear expressing their concerns and asking Beshear to reconsider the mask mandate for children ages two to four. Dossett said they also encouraged the Governor to allow decisions to be made at the local level.
