Helping Hands of Trigg County has announced plans to build a new food pantry on Lafayette Street, a project more than three decades in the making.
Food Pantry Manager Linda Copeland said the current facility on Line Street has simply become too small to meet the community’s growing needs.
click to download audioThe new building will provide easier access with separate entrance and exit doors, eliminate the need to navigate multiple doorways and ramps, and significantly increase storage capacity.
Copeland said the pantry currently serves an average of 170 to 180 families each month.
click to download audioMuch of the food comes through Feeding America and Dollar General donations, as well as food drives normally hosted by Hancock’s Market and Food Giant of Cadiz.
Copeland says the new 40-by-70-foot facility will include walk-in refrigeration and freezer space, making it much easier for volunteers to organize and distribute food.
click to download audioConstruction is expected to take four to six months, with organizers hopeful the pantry could be operational by late fall or early winter.
The new food bank will be accessed from Lafayette Street just west of Wharton Road, with an exit to Main Street on Roost Drive next to their bargain barn.
