City Council To Consider $1.5 Million Funding Request For Street Resurfacing

Hopkinsville Public Works Director Mike Perry

Hopkinsville City Council will consider at its next meeting a funding request for more than $1 million to resurface and pave streets after action by the Committee of the Whole during Thursday night’s meeting.

Public Works Director Mike Perry said on October 7th he requested $1.5 million for additional street paving at the Future Funding Review Committee meeting. He added with limited funds through the MRA dollars each year for paving, they want to use the additional funding to get caught up on resurfacing streets in the city. ‘

Perry also noted they are requesting some state roads be recommended for paving but that decision will need to be made by the committee. He said there are a lot of state roads in the city and most of their complaints are pertaining to these roads. He added the only issue is if they pave the state road, they could “get stuck with it”.

Perry noted they have $735,000 earmarked for paving this year.

After some discussion, a motion was made to forward the street resurfacing/paving funding request for city streets only.

In other action, the committee forwarded to the city council a recommendation by Chief Administrative Officer Troy Body for the city’s $50,000 T-Mobile Community Grant to be split equally and awarded to the Woody Winfrey Fire-Transportation Museum for painting and repairs and for technological upgrades to the Boys and Girls Club.

And after a lot of discussion, the city council will consider restricting the 3rd round of CARES money for future pension obligations. Chief Financial Officer Robert Martin says the $231,094 was deposited in the General Fund. He also explained that CARES funding can basically be spent as authorized by the council, whereas ARPA funding has very strict guidelines.

The next regularly scheduled Hopkinsville City Council meeting is Tuesday evening, November 2nd, at 6:00 in Council Chambers at the Municipal Building.
