Three Large Airport Hangars Being Drafted For Hopkinsville

With business booming in the tri-county area of Christian, Todd and Trigg counties, the Hopkinsville-Christian County Airport could soon be seeing some serious upgrades.

During Tuesday’s Christian County Fiscal Court session, District 4 Magistrate Darrell Gustafson — a county appointee for Hopkinsville’s Airport board — noted the organization is in the middle of design plans being drafted for three larger hangers, which would each likely have 16-foot by 40-foot openings for bigger aircraft.

A year after constructing 10 smaller T-hangars for single-engine aircraft, like Cessna builds, Gustafson said the airport is receiving more and more traffic by the week — as the 5,400-foot airlane can service nearly all types of planes that need to land in the area.

However, housing them was a different story, and Gustafson said there is a considerable need for larger hangars in order to meet some commercial demands for local business and industry.

Gustafson also noted the mile-long strip recently underwent a successful overlay, as a crack had developed and needed to be repaired.

Opened to the public in November 1952, the Hopkinsville-Christian County Airport currently has 31 aircraft based at the field — including 28 single-engine airplanes, two multi-engine airplanes and one glider. From 2018-19, the strip serviced an average 112 flights per day, which included 46 percent for general aviation purposes, 32 percent for transient aviation, 15 percent for military use and 7 percent for air taxi use.
