Madisonville Woman Charged With Murder In Fatal January Shooting

Tara Skaggs/Hopkins County Jail

A Madisonville woman arrested in connection to a shooting in January is now facing a murder charge after her first-degree assault charge was amended during a hearing in Hopkins County Friday.

The Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office reported 48-year old Tara Skaggs was arrested on January 23 by deputies after they responded to an assault at 179 Liberty Church Loop in Madisonville. The initial report from deputies said 66-year old William Matheny had suffered a gunshot wound. He was transported to Baptist Health Madisonville and later flown to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville where authorities said he was in critical condition.

During the investigation, Skaggs was taken into custody and charged with first-degree domestic assault. Matheny reportedly died from his injuries on January 29.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the assault charge against Skaggs was amended to capital murder during a preliminary hearing in Hopkins County District Court Friday and her bond was increased to $500,000.

Skaggs remains lodged in the Hopkins County Detention Center.
