Lack Of Action By Governor Beshear Means ‘Born-Alive Infant Protection Act’ Is Law

Senate Bill 9 or the ‘Born-Alive Infant Protection Act’ became law early Friday morning after Governor Andy Beshear’s window to sign or veto the bill expired.

The bill was sponsored by Third District State Senator Whitney Westerfield, who tells the News Edge, he was thrilled the bill passed, and they did not have to override Governor Beshear’s veto.

The bill drew bipartisan support, as the bill received 78-percent support for both chambers of the Kentucky General Assembly.

Westerfield adds the Commonwealth needed this protection on the books to help families with children born-alive.

One of those stories involved a little girl born-alive in central Kentucky, whose name you will find in Senate Bill 9.

Even though the bill is now law, Senator Westerfield is disappointed that Governor Beshear did not sign it.

The full Kentucky General Assembly returns to Frankfort on February 2 to finish the 30-day session, which has 22-days remaining.

Westerfield says the main accomplishment when they return is working on the 2021-22 state budget.
