A U.S. Postal Service worker is no longer employed following an investigation into the discovery of unopened absentee ballots inside a dumpster in eastern Jefferson County.

WAVE-3 News reports a contractor renovating a home found 112 ballots Thursday. The ballots were intended for voters in the Jeffersontown area and had not been filled out.

“The case has been accepted for federal prosecution by the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Special Agent Scott Balfour stated Friday. “They will determine what charges are appropriate after a review of all the facts in the case.”

Balfour added such incidents are “exceedingly rare.”
