National Farm Safety Week for the Ag Edge kicked off with stops at Wildcat Chevrolet and Nutrien Ag.

Every Farmer Counts continues to be the focal point of farm safety throughout 2020, with an emphasis not only on the farm but also properly maintained vehicles, livestock safety, equipment safety, and mental and physical health.

During a morning stop at Wildcat Chevrolet Manager, Michael Oliver talked about the importance of safety on the farm.  He said one of the most critical safety issues involves grain bins.  Oliver says it is easy for a farmer or farm-worker to get into a bin to remove some lodged grain and get sucked down into the grain.  Oliver said farmers need to make sure they use a safety harness and let others know they are going inside the bin.  He also stressed the importance of being prepared to meet farm equipment on the roadway and having a plan to pull off the road to make room.

Oliver also discussed the farm truck market, the backlog orders from the manufacturer, and what is the latest trend in the market.

During an afternoon stop at Nutrien Ag in Hopkinsville, Manager Brian Fitzsimmons talked about the importance of safety training for their employees and staff that work in the business.

Fitzsimmons also discussed their role in the agriculture industry and what they do to serve farmers at Nutrien Ag.
